I'm 69 and have reinvented myself so many times it's exhausting. Most of the time, in the past, I excelled at what I chose to do and once I hit the top, I was over-it and on to the next shiny thing. Now I'm just tired and have spent Thousand of dollars trying new things thinking they will motivate me and I just sit here at the end of mu day and stare blankly at RUclips.

Diagnosed during 2020 as well. I feel stuck even tho I’m doing all the things. I have too many distractions (children). I’m tired just by getting ready for the day and getting everyone out the door. I’m done with the day by 2pm. I have no ambition. I feel I’ve done everything I want to do. Everything is too much work. My only goals are to keep myself under control so I have a peaceful home for my kids. I fail too often tho.

A lot of this is great advice, thank you. My two issues with this video are 1) all the things I’ve done are too numerous to list, that said I get what you mean by recognizing the difference between what you do that is true to yourself and what you do to meet outside expectations. So I didn’t need the list thing, myself. 2) please don’t get too close to victim shaming. There are plenty of people who are legitimate victims of circumstances outside of their control. Telling someone who is absolutely stuck and actually has no options that are reasonable can’t just “snap out of it.” Sure most people have options they haven’t thought about but for some folks who simply don’t, how about saying something like “try looking at the things you *can* do, even if they’re not the best options. Sometimes you have to compromise now to be true to yourself later.” Any time I get advice that suggests that I’m “doing it wrong” I reject it. If someone says “What I do is look at it this way…” I find it much easier to consider. Just my opinion, of course. Hope you find it useful!

Caren, I love you. Thanks for being you. Wow, you are describing me. I am 63, undiagnosed with ADHD. I never stayed at a job more than 2 years. I just got fed up with Management, co-workers, the surroundings and lousy pay. I did finish college, but not in 4 years. I chose not to have children and I have never married. I have moved all over the country out of the need for change and in search of a better job. I do better in jobs where the boss gives specific things to accomplish, but with minimal management. I hated that we are a team BS at work. I always got unsatisfactory marks in school as a child for "Listens well and follows directions." I am often so super focused on some things that the day can go by, and I wonder where it went. I always felt so stressed out and impulsive in my youth and never fit in with people. As I am older and look at people in society, I wonder WTF.

This is all great. But (at least in my case) the stuff I like to do are usually connected to and are a small part of what I have to do OR it is not very valuable (can’t make money with it, or worse, it costs me money). Typically stuff I need to do (but hate) is the stuff that is most lucrative and my interests (no matter how good I am in those) are rarely financially usable or viable (or if they are then the advantages are reaped by somebody else or I’d need to learn and do something I don’t like). I’m 48 and my life is quite the trip in the jungle, like an Indiana Jones movie, except I hate to teach and the Nazis usually take the loot.

Adhd just means your reward mechanisms are not coupled to the tasks you need to do. Todays life requires too much of the same tasks, and if those arent rewarding to you you wont be able to focus and we will call you adhd. No dopamine, no norepinehrine, no epinehrine, with means no focus on the task. No positive emotion from the task, and no energy to do the task. You are not broken. Society is. I get you have to live. Use your anger at the state of affairs as a substitute, otherwise it will default to powerless anxiety. And get on stimulants if you can, they will give you the dopamine you otherwise cant muster

One thing I’ve noticed is that ADHD is beginning to be blamed for some negative, toxic and immoral behaviors that are not caused by ADHD, but simply perpetrated by negative, toxic, immoral people that just happen to have ADHD, or claim to. Plenty of neurotypical people do the very same negative, toxic, immoral behaviors. This is really concerning especially since those with ADHD have just begun to speak up and talk about ADHD in the last 10-15 years. I would hate to see negative labels pinned on ADHD out of fear, misinformation and ignorance. 😞

I’m a starter and activator … not a process person, so details of ‘ongoing operations’ of life are a struggle and exhausting. I have started businesses and been successful surrounded by people who live for ‘order’ . But without that.. From finances to my health… it buries me and then overwhelm then paralysis and apathy…😢 Once I added children to life I went from overwhelm to “i give up’ and just got used to feeling overwhelmed apathy all the time- time to break it!

This concept is me to a T! The problem for me is that work is the biggest issue for me. I hate my job, can't find another, and it's interfering in my creative endeavors because I have to be at work at the tines when I have the most energy and focus. I'm ready to just say the heck with it and quit and work hard at the career I want to make a living at.
